Improving Maternal Adherence through Multiple Micronutrient Supplement Education

Abstrak

Micronutrient deficiencies during pregnancy may increase the risk of maternal anemia, low birth weight, and impaired fetal growth associated with stunting. According to the 2024 Indonesian Nutritional Status Survey (SSGI), the prevalence of stunting in West Java decreased to 15.9%, however, strengthening nutrition-specific interventions for pregnant women remains necessary. This community service initiative was designed to improve pregnant women's knowledge of Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS) and support regular supplementation during pregnancy. The program involved 25 pregnant women in the early and late trimesters in Tajurhalang District, Bogor Regency, West Java. An educational-participatory approach was implemented through interactive lectures, discussions, demonstrations, individual counseling, and knowledge evaluation using pre-test and post-test. The mean pre-test score increased from 58.20 to 88.20 in the post-test, representing an improvement of 30.00 points (51.55%). Participants also reported nausea, forgetting to take supplements, and concerns about side effects as barriers to MMS consumption, while family support, particularly from husbands, was considered helpful in maintaining regular supplementation. The educational program demonstrated an improvement in participants' knowledge of the benefits, appropriate timing, and importance of MMS during pregnancy. Continuous education, family involvement, and monitoring by health workers and health cadres are needed to support sustained adherence to MMS consumption.
